Expected Outcome : In this proposal the researchers are going to develop an automatic sanitizing system that can disinfect the hands of the people during this pandemic condition automatically. Expected Timeline : 01 month Remarks : The world is facing covid-19 pandemic situation which has proven to be very hazardous situation. To fight against this social distancing and sanitization is very useful. We Propose designing of a automatic hand sanitizing machine that could be helpful in during this war against covid-19. In this current situation there is a need to install these sanitizing units in the public places to avoid contact with the virus. Also the proposed design makes optimized use of sanitizer to reduce its wastage and avoid overuse. In a broad way, the hand sanitizing device is developed by making use of a acrylic sheet which is cut to a specific dimension. The system comprises of a high pressure pipe with mist nozzle which operates with air pressure and pump. The system is automated by using a controlling unit to sense the presence of hand and gets on automatically. URL : PI Details : Dr. Gajendra Dixit Professor Department of Mechanical Engg. Er. 9 | Project Title : VIRALYSER 1.0: A Portable Box to Sanitize Inanimate Items
Expected Outcome : To design a portable box with ability to sanitize items received at our doorsteps. In addition, the same can also be applied to various other inanimate items viz., files, papers, currency etc. Expected Timeline : Remarks : In wake of COVID-19 outbreak, it has become mandatory to stay home and be safe. With social distancing and self-isolation increasingly becoming the norm (Government mandate) during coronavirus pandemic, people have grown increasingly wary about shopping in crowded malls or grocery stores and nervous about confronting empty shelves amid the coronavirus pandemic. This has led to increased delivery of items to our door steps. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus and is transmitted person-to-person through respiratory droplets. Delivered items including, groceries, online shopping pose a great threat to contract COVID-19. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the virus was detectable on plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours, and on cardboard for up to 24 hours. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, also suggested that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on variety of surfaces. It was demonstrated that in a small scale study, it could survive upto 24 hrs on cardboard. Newyork times also reported that two dozens postal workers have contracted COVID-19 as of March 23rd, 2020. There is growing evidence that COVID-19 could be transmitted to humans who are staying at home due to PAN India lockdown and are receiving vegetables, Fruits, groceries etc delivered at their doorsteps. This prompted Department of Biotechnology, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad to design a portable box with ability to sanitize items received at our doorsteps. In addition, the same can also be applied to various other inanimate items viz., files, papers, currency etc. URL : Additional Info PI Details : Prof. Shivesh Sharma, Dr. Nand Kumar Singh, Dr. Ashutosh Mani, Dr. Sameer Srivastava and Dr. Ambak Kumar Rai [Department of Biotechnology]. 16 | Project Title : Design and Development of disinfecting boxes to disinfect fruits, vegetables and other items of daily use
Expected Outcome : Design and prototyping of UV-C wavelength based disinfecting box Expected Timeline : Prototype is ready. Further design refinements are being carried out. Will be complete by 31st May 2 Remarks : It is well known at UV-C wavelength (~270 nm) has the ability to destroy the nucleic acid contained in virus/ bacteria. Hence, these microorganisms are destroyed upon exposure to this this wavelength. A box containing suitable number of UV-C sources of appropriate wattage has been constructed.Fruits, vegetables and other items of daily use are placed within this for thirty minutes. This results in destruction of any virus/ bacteria that might be present. Tests on the optimum time required for complete destruction of the virus/ bacteria, optimum wattage and distribution of lamps are being carried out. 20 | Project Title : Disinfection of inanimate objects from Covid-19 contagion by irradiating with UV light
Expected Outcome : Design and development of movable Covid-19 disinfection chamber based on UV irradiation Expected Timeline : The desired disinfecting chamber can be produced within two weeks upon arrival of the raw materials/components Remarks : At the current trying time, the COVID-19 pandemic is the global threat which transcends territorial, political, religious, cultural, and definitely academic boundaries. Healthcare workers and biologists are at the frontline, working for mitigating the outbreak of the disease. Although the current challenge apparently seems far from the physical scientists and engineers who generally deal with inanimate objects, there is a scope for them to contribute to this global crisis. To address this challenge, herein, we plan to set up a movable Covid-19 disinfection chamber operated by UV-C light (wavelength of 200-280 nm in the electromagnetic spectrum) that has been known for long to disinfect a variety of substances including food and water. It works by its germicidal effects, destroying microorganisms such as virus, bacteria by cleaving their DNA structures upon absorption of UV. The intensity of UV-C light and exposure time will be adjusted depending on the dimension of the chamber and the amount of substances to be cleaned. The designed chamber is made of plywood and comprising of wheels that make the system movable and the dimension of the chamber is restricted to 6??6??8?. The current approach is powerful and more convenient in terms of its low cost and non-invasive nature, in comparison to existing wet-chemical methods. This chamber can be used to disinfect a variety of daily used items including groceries, vegetables, wallet, currency, spectacles, luggage, books, pen, mobile phones, wristwatches, leather shoes, specifically the items which are susceptible to be damaged by detergent washing or other wet chemical methods. However, the present approach can only be applicable to disinfect the non-living objects. URL : http://www.nits.ac.in/departments/chem/chem.php Additional Info PI Details : Dr. S. S. Dhar, Dr. M. A. 27 | Project Title : Development and fabrication of low-cost sterilizer box using UV-Hot Air combination (yoUVen)
Expected Outcome : A prototype low-cost equipment for sterilization of electronic gadgets, vegetables, fruits, stationaries etc. for domestic use with rapid up-scaling feasibility Expected Timeline : One month Remarks : Although several new designs of sterilizer box have been emerging recently for decontamination of these surfaces in view of current outbreak of COVID - 19, most of them rely on irradiation of UV-C on the surfaces to deactivate virus. However, the complete sterilization of entire surface may not be guaranteed by mere UV irradiance, particularly due to shadowing in case of objects with irregular shape or when the objects are in bunch, such as currency notes. We, at Optoelectronic Materials and Devices lab at Department of Applied Physics, SVNIT, Surat, have developed and fabricated a novel sterilizer box to overcome this problem. The design involves optimized combination of UV-C radiation along with hot-air to ensure thorough sterilization of various objects, even when the surface is irregular in shape. The sterilizer box allows the user to select between only UV-C irradiation or the combination of it with hot-air for a desired amount of time and the user can also chose the temperature of the air, which is kept constant for the entire cycle. The equipment is low-cost and can serve the purpose of sterilization of various items used for domestic purpose in day-to-day life during the Corona outbreak and beyond that.
